4 things to do once you land in Luang Prabang, Laos

Luang Prabang is a city on the Mekong River in Laos. It was the capital of the former Kingdom of Lan Xang, which was a powerful dynasty that ruled over mainland Southeast Asia from the 13th to 17th centuries.

Explore Wat Xieng Thong

Nestled on the banks of the Mekong River, Luang Prabang is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that is home to many Buddhist temples, including Wat Xieng Thong. Wat Xieng Thong was built in 1560 by King Setthathirath. It's famous for its large golden Buddha statue and its ornate interior design — which includes an elaborate ceiling filled with frescoes. 

The temple's exterior features beautiful murals depicting scenes from Buddha's life and teaching. If you're lucky, there may be a monk chanting outside during your visit!

Visit the morning market

The Morning Market is one of the most popular things to do in Luang Prabang. It’s located on the banks of the Nam Khan River and sells everything from fresh produce to dried fish to traditional souvenirs. There are also plenty of food stalls selling noodles and Lao coffee, as well as street food like grilled corn on the cob and fried bananas.

Take a cooking class

Wander the National Museum of Laos

The city's museums are part of this fascinating mix. There are several museums in Luang Prabang, each offering something different.

The Royal Palace Museum is one to visit. This museum was constructed in 1904 during the French colonial era for King Sisavang Vong and his family. Today it houses a number of fascinating royal possessions, from golden Buddha statues to classic American cars.
