How to make the most of an escorted tour: Top tips from our tour managers

Get expert advice on the best ways to make the most of an escorted tour from those who experience them every day – our trusted local tour managers.

From intimate excursions around the world’s most impressive monuments and the expert knowledge of our tour managers to the opportunities to connect with like-minded travellers, there’s plenty to love about escorted touring. For those who haven’t experienced one before, though, the prospect can be a little daunting – our first-timers’ guide can help with that!

We recently got the low-down on the dos and don’ts of escorted touring from four of our expert tour managers – Tony, Michael, Tomaro and Warwick – who cover destinations from the UK and Europe to magnificent North America. Our tour managers talked us through the things that can make each moment even more special, as well as some more nuanced destination-specific tips, to help you get the most out of your experience. Whether it’s making room for home comforts and knowing your limits or organising your luggage in a space-effective way, here’s what they had to say.

Tony – André Rieu concert-breaks, Wimbledon & Belfast

There are many small things you can do that are sure to make a difference. For instance, if your day doesn’t feel right without a proper cup of tea, bring your favourite tea bags along, and even a small travel kettle if you’d like. I’d also recommend talking to your tour manager, coach driver, or hotel reception staff as they’re all great sources of local insight. Whether it’s a tucked-away café, a scenic walk, or a festival happening nearby, they’ll often have tips that don’t appear in guidebooks.

Our top tip: Do a little pre-trip research

If you’re craving a certain cuisine or want to catch a local theatre show, it’s worth doing a quick search before you go. Whether it's tracking down the best bar with live music, scoping out the best museums, or finding that perfect lunch spot, a bit of planning can go a long way in making your trip even more memorable.

Michael – Spain

For me, an organised traveller is a happy traveller. Airports can be stressful places, so arriving a little earlier, checking in, and going through security and passport control as soon as possible can help make them less chaotic. Make some time to eat before your flight and stick to water or juice to stay refreshed while you’re there, too. Packing’s important as well. To help keep clothes looking fresh, place thin plastic sheets (like those from dry cleaning) or tissue paper between layers. It reduces friction and keeps garments from creasing. And remember – shoes go in last!

Our top tip: Print out copies of your important documents

I’d also recommend carrying printed copies of your important documents. Even in our digital age, having paper copies of key documents can be a lifesaver. Print out your travel insurance, boarding passes, prescriptions, tickets, and a photocopy of your passport. Should systems fail, get hacked, or your phone battery die, having hard copies ensures you’re still covered.

Tomaro – The USA

I think the big thing to remember while on tour is to look after yourself. Staying hydrated while exploring is key, and bringing a reusable water bottle is a great way to save money and travel in a more sustainable way. I’d also recommend knowing your limits, particularly when it comes to mobility. Being realistic about your pace and comfort level, especially if the itinerary includes uneven terrain or lots of walking, will mean you can plan ahead and keep your trip stress-free. Bringing an extra foldable duffel bag never hurts, too, and can save you from splurging for extra luggage at the airport with all your new souvenirs.

Our top tip: Give feedback when you can

Your reviews help tour managers fine-tune future experiences, keep the good bits, and improve where needed. It might sound clichéd, but your voice really does matter.

Warwick – Canada

Luggage is key when you’re travelling on an escorted tour, and there are ways you can get ahead of the game before your holiday has even started. One thing I’d always recommend is to use luggage tags. Around 80% of Brits don’t use them, but they’re essential for hotel staff to identify bags quickly for portering. Even if you’d rather not include your full address or phone number, just having your last name visible helps a lot. Packing a spare charging cable is another travel must – it’s the number one most-requested item when people forget or lose theirs. Having a backup can save you time and stress.

Our top tip: Travel with packing cubes

When it comes to staying organised, packing cubes make a massive difference, especially on multi-stop tours. You'll be amazed at how much easier it is to find what you need.
