Inside our itineraries: A Q&A with our partners at Chobe Safari Lodge
Find out why Botswana stands out as one of Africa’s finest safari destinations as we sit down with Miriam, one of our trusted partners at Chobe Safari Lodge.
When it comes to safari, Africa’s diverse destinations offer different things. South Africa offers an accessible experience, perfect for first-timers, Zimbabwe promises breath-taking backdrops to each game drive, and Tanzania hosts the world’s most dramatic animal migration every year. Botswana, though, is special for a variety of reasons, and you can explore its thrilling highlights on our award-winning tours, On Safari in Botswana – Chobe National Park and Ultimate Safari – Zimbabwe, Botswana & Victoria Falls.
We recently sat down with our trusted partners at the Chobe Safari Lodge and spoke to their Sales and Marketing Manager, Miriam, for some first-hand insight into what you can look forward to on a Botswanan safari. From the things that first inspired her to share Botswana with others to the best times of year to visit, Miriam painted a vivid picture of what makes Chobe National Park so memorable. Here’s what Miriam had to say.
How long have you been running safaris?
I’ve been part of the safari world for many years now, and Chobe Safari Lodge was one of my first homes in Africa. I worked at the lodge in Kasane for 10 years before returning to Europe to share the beauty of Botswana overseas in a Sales and Marketing position. Safari life gets under your skin, and once it does, you’re hooked for life.
Chobe Safari Lodge has been standing for much longer than that; it was the very first hotel in Northern Botswana, opening its doors back in 1959.

What first inspired you to book safari trips in Botswana?
It was the sky, really. The way the sun sets here, how the colours stretch and linger, and how the stars arrive one by one. Botswana has a way of slowing you down just by looking up. I realised early on that a safari isn’t only about animals, it’s about space, light, silence, and perspective. I wanted to share that feeling with others, that moment when the day fades, and everything suddenly makes sense.
In your opinion, what makes Chobe National Park stand out as a safari destination?
Chobe is wonderfully generous. You don’t have to search hard for wildlife here. The density, especially along the river, is extraordinary with elephants everywhere, buffalo by the hundreds, hippos and crocodiles. Predators are never far away, and the birds even stop non-birders in their tracks. We are well-known for river safaris, and you can see the park from completely different angles. It keeps surprising you.

Do you have a favourite animal to look out for in the wild?
Elephants. Always elephants. They’re clever, emotional, stubborn, gentle, dramatic, and endlessly entertaining. You can watch them for hours and still feel like you’ve only scratched the surface of their world. If you want to learn more, the Chobe Safari Lodge is now home to the first elephant centre in Botswana, an informative centre with engaging displays and educational resources, where you can learn all about these incredible animals.
Do you have any tips for making the most of every moment on safari?
Slow down. Don’t chase the checklist. Some of the best safari moments happen when you stop trying to “see something” and sit quietly. Listen, watch the small things, trust your guide, and let the bush reveal itself. The Chobe Safari Lodge is the perfect base for taking your time between safari outings: you can book a spa treatment, enjoy sunset at the Monkey Bar with a unique cocktail (our new signature features the local mopane worm!) or take a slow stroll along the Chobe bush walk.

What can customers look forward to with a stay at Chobe Safari Lodge?
Warmth and genuine care. Every guest matters, and we make sure they feel it. You can expect a stay that feels effortless, generous, and full of choice.
Yes, the iconic Chobe River cruises are still a highlight – front-row seats to one of Africa’s greatest wildlife spectacles. But guests can also enjoy guided game drives, easy day trips to Victoria Falls, and time to slow down and explore our Explorers Lounge, where Botswana’s wild stories live in cool, air-conditioned comfort.
Dining is a big part of the experience, too. From relaxed riverside meals to outdoor feasts at the Sedudu Outdoor Dining experience or under the stars on a dinner cruise, there’s a wonderful variety to suit every mood.
When would you say is the best time of year to visit?
There’s honestly no wrong time. The dry months are famous for big herds and classic sightings, but the green season is magical. Lush landscapes, dramatic skies, baby animals, fewer visitors, and beautiful light. Each season tells a different story. It just depends on which chapter you want to read.

Do you have any suitcase essentials you’d recommend customers bring?
A good hat, comfortable walking shoes, sunscreen, insect repellent, and layers for early mornings and evenings. Binoculars are a must. And bring curiosity. That’s the most important thing you can pack!
Are there any non-safari experiences customers can enhance their itinerary with?
Absolutely. While safari is at the heart of what we do, there’s so much more for guests to enjoy here. Our Explorers Lounge offers a deeper connection to Botswana beyond the game drive — a calm, air-conditioned space with books, maps and exhibits filled with the country’s stories, characters, and history.
Guests can visit our elephant centre, where conservation and learning come together, or explore the Chobe bush walk, discovering the finer details that bring the ecosystem to life. For something truly special, Treetops Sundowners offer unforgettable views and golden-hour moments high above the Chobe River.
Evenings bring guests to Sedudu, where traditional dancing, firelight, and local flavours turn dinner into a cultural celebration. And coming soon, the Chobe Gallery will showcase local artists, adding a creative layer to the lodge experience.
