Inside our itineraries Q&A series: The man behind the music, André Rieu
Go behind the scenes with André Rieu in this exclusive Q&A as the world’s favourite maestro reveals the heart and humour at the core of his spectacular shows.
Inside this special Q&A, André Rieu opens up about the magic behind his concerts. The celebrated Dutch violinist and conductor talks about sharing joy through music, choosing pieces that touch the heart, and the energy he draws from audiences all over the world.
Whether he’s performing in Vienna or his hometown of Maastricht, André’s goal has always been simple: to make classical music a celebration of life. Join us as he shares personal reflections, favourite memories, and the timeless emotions that keep fans coming back year after year.
1. When you first started out, did you ever think your music would reach so many people around the world?
When I first started out, I never imagined that my music would reach so many people around the world. My dream was always to travel the world with my own orchestra, and to see audiences from so many countries embracing it is fantastic.
2. What do you hope people feel or remember after seeing one of your concerts?
After one of my concerts, I hope people feel uplifted and happy. I want them to leave with a smile and beautiful memories. I get letters from people telling me they needed two weeks to come down after one of my concerts. Many friendships have also started during my concerts.
3. How do you choose the music for your shows? Is it more about what you love or what the audience will enjoy?
I choose with my heart. If a melody touches me, I know it will touch you.
4. What helps you stay excited and inspired after so many years of touring and performing?
What keeps me excited and inspired is the energy of the audience and my wonderful orchestra. Every concert is different, every city is unique, and the connection with people gives me new inspiration every time.
5. Your concerts always feel joyful and full of life. Has that always been something you aimed for?
Yes, bringing joy and humour to classical music has always been my goal. Music is about emotion, and for me, the most beautiful emotion is happiness. I want my concerts to be a celebration of life.
6. You’ve travelled so widely with your orchestra, is there a place or venue that you’ve especially loved playing?
I have been fortunate to play in many beautiful places, but Vrijthof Square in Maastricht, my hometown, is always special. The atmosphere there, surrounded by friends and family, is magical. Performing at Schönbrunn Castle in Vienna was also magical.
7. Are there any pieces you’ve performed many times that still move you each time you play them?
There are many pieces I have performed countless times, like By the Beautiful Blue Danube, and they still move me. For me, it is the most perfect waltz ever composed.
8. Do you have any little habits or traditions before going on stage that help you feel ready?
Before going on stage, I always do the soundcheck, then the team has dinner together, and I take a nap. I then meet my orchestra, and we’re ready and happy to go on stage!
9. Why do you think classical music still speaks to people of all ages today?
I believe classical music speaks to people of all ages because it expresses universal emotions, love, joy, sadness, and hope. These feelings are timeless, and music is a language everyone in the world can understand. However, it has to be performed in a way that the audience can connect.
10. Are there any plans or dreams you’re excited about for the future, musically or personally?
I will continue making music until I am 140 years old! So, there’s still a lot to come. Personally, I’d love to visit Alaska one day, and with my orchestra it would be fantastic to play on the moon!
