Inside our itineraries: Solo travel around Sicily with Kate
From classical temples to the charming island towns that keep travellers coming back for more, we find out what our Holiday Planner, Kate, made of her solo escape to Sicily.
Italy is a destination that simply never gets old, with its cosmopolitan centres, ancient ruins and glorious natural landscapes. Of all the Italian regions, though, Sicily has a special place in our hearts and keeps our customers coming back every year. With its charming rural towns, some of Europe’s finest coastal resorts and a distinctive local culture, there’s so much to love about this delightful Mediterranean hotspot.
We recently caught up with our Holiday Planner, Kate, after she joined one of our Exclusively Solos holidays to the island. From her first taste of solo travel to her personal highlights, we got an overview of all things Sicily. Here’s what she had to say.
What was a wish-list moment of your trip?
Erice was absolutely beautiful! I loved the views and the ambience of the place.
How did this trip change the way you see the destination?
I think Sicily is very spiritual and I didn’t realise just how beautiful and friendly it was!

Was there an unexpected experience that turned out to be a highlight of the trip?
Taking the time to actually explore Trapani and Valderice, where our hotel was based, was lovely as we hadn’t really had the time to take in the scenery.
Who do you think would absolutely love this destination, and why?
Culture buffs and history lovers, for sure! People who appreciate a more relaxed way of life will also enjoy it.

Did any of the hotels or experiences stand out?
We only used one, but it was high quality and the surrounding town, Valderice, was the perfect setting for our stay.
What local dishes or culinary moments wowed you the most?
Arancini! I absolutely loved them. Cannoli was another treat that I could eat all day.
What cultural traditions or local encounters added something special to your journey?
I loved all their tales of love and how the island is protected by Medusa in traditional folklore. The Greek influence is also amazing, especially the Temple of Hercules.

What new insights or practical tips would you share to help others plan the perfect trip here?
Make sure to wear some comfortable walking shoes and lots of mosquito spray each day. Also, pack for all weathers. It’s quite an active holiday, so it’s a good idea to come prepared for a decent amount of walking each day. I counted all our steps, and on average, we did 11,000 per day!
If you could sum up the feeling of this place in one word, what would it be?
Enticing.
Would you go back, and if so, what would you do next time?
If I were to go back with my partner, I’d like to explore the towns further inland.
