Not ready to leave the summer behind? The Mediterranean offers some of the best destinations for a last-minute getaway, and there’s still time to secure your spot this year.

European summertime is in full swing, and we’re thrilled to see so many wish-list moments in the making. With longer days, warmer weather and glorious sunshine, there’s a lot to love about the holiday hotspots closer to home at the moment. As we head into August, though, we’re also looking ahead to the continent’s milder weather and the quieter exploration it brings.

While we’re losing a little heat, it’s not all doom and gloom as some of Europe’s finest destinations are just as enjoyable in September! With departures still available across a whole host of award-winning tours, and exclusive discounted prices, there’s never been a better time to explore Europe. Whether you want to hold onto the summer just a little longer or simply fancy a spontaneous trip south later this year, these are five Mediterranean gems which are ideal for late summer.

Santorini, Greece

While its popularity as a holiday haven peaks between May and August, Santorini is the perfect choice for those after a quieter escape later in the year with its year-round warm weather and outstanding island landscapes. Nestled on a volcanic archipelago, Santorini features a number of delightful Blue Flag beaches, wineries and charming coastal towns. What’s more, with regular ferry crossings to a number of other nearby Aegean islands, it’s incredibly easy to pay Greece’s other island treasures a visit.

Ephesus, Turkey

Home to fascinating archaeological sites, lively bazaars and striking beachfront vistas, Turkey’s east coast is ideal for culture buffs and beachgoers alike. With recent heatwaves causing mid-summer temperatures to soar, exploring this exquisite region in July and August can get a little too much at times. It makes sense, then, that beautiful Ephesus should come into its own as the daily temperatures drop throughout September. The coastal town of Kuşadasi, with its pristine golden beaches and distinctly Anatolian atmosphere, is a great base to discover nearby Ephesus and Sirince.

Kyrenia, Cyprus

Often considered Northern Cyprus’ tourism capital, Kyrenia keeps travellers coming back year after year, and with its lively harbours, mountain views and historic landmarks, it’s no wonder why. Such is the island’s popularity that Kyrenia’s narrow streets can feel a bit too crowded at the height of the summer, and so a holiday in the late summer offers a more laid-back experience. With easy access to a range of other nearby centres, the city promises unrivalled exploration of the island’s must-see northern landmarks. Better yet, Cyprus ranks amongst the fairest spots in Europe for weather with an average of 320 sunny days each year, making it a great choice for those who aren’t quite ready to give up the summer’s warmth.

Valletta, Malta

Valletta, the stunning capital of Malta, is a city of diverse influences, grand palaces and ornate religious landmarks, which draws newcomers and seasoned Maltese visitors every year to the island’s shores. While nearby Mdina and Malta’s sister island, Gozo, are equally impressive, Valletta is a location which takes on a different dimension in late summer with a host of public festivals. In September, for instance, visitors can witness the Feast of Our Lady of Victory celebration, which commemorates the city’s patron saint and its unlikely military triumphs across the centuries. With traditional Maltese cuisine, lively traditional dance performances and an all-round joyous atmosphere, this unmissable event promises to elevate your trip in a truly memorable way.

Gjirokastër, Albania

For those in search of something a little different, few Mediterranean destinations compare to idyllic Gjirokastër, Albania’s ‘City of Stone’. Comprising a quintessentially Albanian atmosphere, authentic Ottoman-inspired buildings and a breath-taking mountainside location, this UNESCO-listed town features impressive sights at every turn. A particular highlight is the city’s old town, one of the most picturesque in the Balkans, and its bustling bazaar areas. As foot traffic can get busy in the middle of the day, the cooler temperatures in the late summer offer a more comfortable time browsing the markets.
