Six UNESCO World Heritage Sites you won't want to miss
With more than 1,200 UNESCO World Heritage Sites across the globe, we're almost spoilt for choice when it comes to must-see landmarks, but which ones stand out?
As advocates for travel, we're firm believers that every destination around the world has qualities that are worth visiting for. Some destinations, though, simply do it better, and there are plenty of unmissable spots across Europe, Asia and beyond that deserve a spot at the top of your travel wish-list.
Enter UNESCO, the United Nations' Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation. Founded in 1945, this international agency has been responsible for promoting cross-cultural interaction and safeguarding hundreds of invaluable historic sites for generations to come.
As things stand today, more than 1,200 landmarks have been listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites and among them are some of the most widely recognisable monuments on the planet. From vast Machu Picchu, the lost city of the Incas, to the ivory-white Taj Mahal, these are the spots which warrant trips all to themselves.
In celebration of World Heritage Day, our team has been thinking of the UNESCO-listed sites that stand out from the rest. With that in mind, here are six you won't want to miss.
Where to find the most impressive UNESCO World Heritage Sites

Schönbrunn Palace, Austria
Representing more than just the fine Baroque architecture that characterises Vienna, the Schönbrunn was the summer residence of the Habsburg dynasty and saw centuries of Austria's imperial history play out around its elegant halls. The palace, cutting a spectacular figure in the Viennese skyline, is a must-see highlight when visiting the Austrian capital, and it's easy to spend a whole day exploring it. From the Versailles-inspired formal gardens to the opulent galleries and audience chambers inside, this Baroque masterpiece was certainly befitting of one of Europe's most powerful royal families.
Our recommended tour – Prague, Vienna & Budapest

Pompeii, Italy
Few destinations are as widely recognised as legendary Pompeii, and with a visit to this ancient site, you'll see ancient history displayed in a truly unique way. Encased in volcanic ash after the eruption of mighty Vesuvius more than 2,000 years ago, this 'lost city' has been frozen in time ever since. Today, you can see the city's 'stone people' (life-like plaster casts of the victims), remarkably well-preserved Roman buildings and the silhouette of Mount Vesuvius presiding over it all, making this a must-see for history enthusiasts.
Our recommended tour – Capri, Pompeii & the Amalfi Coast

The Acropolis, Greece
Crowning the Athens skyline, the ancient Acropolis is about as recognisable a landmark as it gets. Perched high above the Greek capital, the Acropolis offers rewarding exploration at every turn and is home to the magnificent Parthenon, amongst several other ancient temples. Overlooking the Saronic Gulf, this vast hilltop ruin tells the story of Ancient Greece and is where Western democracy and classical philosophy first took root. Even if you're not a history buff, though, the views alone are worth the climb.

The Great Wall, China
Stretching for thousands of kilometres across some of northern China's most dramatic landscapes, the Great Wall is one of the few man-made structures that can actually be seen from space. Constructed over centuries to defend against invasion, much of it has weathered and eroded over time, which adds to its charm and character. Head to well-preserved sections like Badaling or Beijing for the best experience, and set aside plenty of time to take it all in.

Machu Picchu, Peru
Nestled in the heart of the Peruvian Andes, more than 2,400 metres above sea level, Machu Picchu is a destination that stays with you long after you've come home. Built by the Incas in the 15th century and then 'lost' for hundreds of years, this remarkable citadel, comprising stone terraces, temples and spectacular mountain vistas, simply must be experienced to be fully appreciated. To get to Machu Picchu, there are hiking routes, coach routes and panoramic rail services. However you choose to get there, though, the journey is absolutely worth it.
Our recommended tour – Peru – Land of the Incas

The Taj Mahal, India
Shining white under the Agra sun, the world-famous Taj Mahal is one of South Asia's most impressive feats of engineering and is a symbol of the Golden Triangle. This magnificent marble mausoleum was commissioned in 1632 by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his beloved wife, Mumtaz Mahal, and features a patchwork of Persian, Islamic, and Indian architectural styles. For the best views of the Taj Mahal, be sure to visit its elegant gardens, stop for a photograph by its famous reflecting pools or see the building at sunset from the Yamuna River.
