The Amazon to the Andes: Our top five wildlife-spotting destinations in Latin America
While Africa is the only place to enjoy a traditional bush safari, these South American gems more than hold their own in terms of unforgettable wildlife-spotting opportunities.
While wildlife spotting might conjure images of traditional bush safaris on the African savanna, other destinations, like Latin America, deserve just as much recognition for the unique wildlife and dramatic landscapes. Pairing the tropical rainforests and mountain landscapes of the south with Central America’s temperate swamps and Caribbean islands, it’s considered the world’s most biodiverse region and promises no shortage of sights.
Though we’re almost spoilt for choice, we’ve been thinking about the best across Latin American destinations to tick off your wildlife-spotting wish-list. Covering everything from Ecuador’s conservation-oriented Galápagos Islands to the wild waterside vistas of the Panama Canal, here are five animal-watching hotspots to discover in Latin America.
Monteverde Cloud Forest, Costa Rica
Though there are almost too many world-class spots to choose in Costa Rica, mountainside Monteverde is a true stand out. Standing at 1,300 feet above sea level, these mist-laden canopies are rife with colourful birdlife and over 2,500 plant species making them a must-visit for birdwatchers and naturalists alike. What’s more, with a series of gravity-defying suspension bridges providing a path through the treetops, you’ll be closer than anywhere else to Monteverde’s vibrant local wildlife.

Iguazú Falls, Argentina
While the two sides of spectacular Iguazú Falls promise memorable exploration, there’s only one choice when it comes to animal-watching. The lower Argentinian side, located at the bottom of the falls, brings visitors closer than ever to the cascading waters with a network of winding bridges and viewing platforms. Though the dramatic landscapes take centre stage, you’ll also be perfectly placed to witness some of the remarkable reptiles and tree-dwelling mammals that call the park home. From coatis and jaguars to the park’s resident caimans and the colourful toucans that fly above, Iguazú’s native creatures are every bit as impressive as the waterfalls.

Amazon Rainforest, Brazil
Dominating Brazil’s northwestern corner, the Amazon Rainforest is world-renowned for its natural beauty and is considered one of South American finest hotspots for wildlife spotting. Spanning over 7,000,000 kilometres, the Amazon is the world’s largest rainforest and boasts just as wide a variety of native animal species and plant life, many of which can’t be found anywhere else! The best way to experience the wonders of the rainforest, though, is with a stop at one of its immersive jungle lodges. Enjoy the quiet calm of the forest at night, wake up to the song of South America’s exotic birdlife, and watch the surrounding vistas teeming with life from the comfort of your room.

Galapagos Islands, Ecuador
Known across the world for Charles Darwin’s famous voyage, the Ecuadorian Galápagos Islands are home to an exquisite range of reptiles, amphibians and marine life, including 12 species of giant tortoise. Where the island really comes into its own, though, is with its birdwatching opportunities. From flightless cormorants and waved albatrosses to the blue-footed boobies, frigatebirds and penguin species that forage beneath the waves, the islands’ lively species are well worth a visit.

Gatun Lake, Panama
Away from the mountains and rainforests of the mainland, some of Latin America’s best wildlife can only be found within the region’s waters. While many go to the Caribbean in search of relaxation, it’s the crystal waters and colourful coral reefs that keep them coming back for more. What’s more, it’s not just the Caribbean’s coast which promises memorable sightseeing, some of the best animal-spotting opportunities can be found on the iconic Panama Canal. Cutting 50 miles through the Isthmus of Panama, this route features the wildlife-rich shores of Gatun Lake and a steady flow of aquatic life through its waterways.
