World Beach Day: Our five favourite beaches across the globe
It’s World Beach Day, so why not plan a relaxing stay on one of our favourite sandy stretches?
Who doesn’t love a seaside escape? As travellers across the globe celebrate World Beach Day, it’s got our team thinking about their absolute favourite coastal destinations. From the dramatic arctic shores of Iceland to the subtropical delights of the Americas, here are five wish-list-topping parts of the world that we just can’t get enough of.
1. Seven Mile Beach, The Caribbean
Stretching, as the name suggests, across seven miles of Grand Cayman’s western coast, this delightful seaside area promises a quintessential Caribbean experience. With its pristine white sands, crystal-clear waters, and charming seafront attractions, Seven Mile Beach is ideal for a relaxing day within easy reach of the island’s capital, Georgetown. If you’d prefer a more active day’s exploration on Grand Cayman, this beach also offers exquisite snorkelling opportunities with shallow-water reefs and colourful sea life beneath the waves.

2. Pink Beach, Indonesia
While Bali’s fashionable black sand beaches often top the travel wish-lists for those who haven’t yet been to Indonesia, regular visitors will agree that the quieter spots are often the best. Enter Pink Beach, which boasts distinctive rose-coloured sand, and ranks amongst the most beautiful beaches in the entire world. Nestled on the secluded Komodo Island, this idyllic east Asian seaside spot is a favourite amongst nature tourists given its wildlife-spotting opportunities. Whether you catch a glimpse of the dragons or not, though, Pink Beach is a spot that deserves a place on any travel wish-list.

3. Belle Mare, Mauritius
Mauritius is an island that exudes elegance across its serene coastal resorts, and you’ll be hard-pressed to find a more idyllic setting for an East African beach retreat. Belle Mare, which looks out over the Indian Ocean, is a particularly good choice with its calmer tides, palm-lined beaches and year-round warmth. What’s more, given the beach’s close proximity to a number of larger Mauritian towns, you’ll have plenty of choice of activities to occupy yourself with, from lychee wine-tastings to tours of the island’s colonial-era landmarks.

4. Reynisfjara Beach, Iceland
Not all beaches are sunshine and sun loungers, but that doesn’t make them any less impressive. Take Iceland’s magnificent Reynisfjara Beach, for instance, which embodies the rugged volcanic charm that the ‘Land of Ice and Fire’ has become known for. Comprising black sands, basalt columns, and towering sea stacks which jut out of the surf, it’s one of Iceland’s most beautiful (and dangerous) landscapes. Though swimming in its waters is not recommended, the spectacle of this enchanting coastal hotspot is a must-see for any Icelandic itinerary.

5. Awaroa Beach, New Zealand
Nestled in Abel Tasman National Park, Awaroa Beach is a popular choice for both its natural beauty and wildlife-spotting opportunities. Known affectionately as “the People’s Beach”, it also has cultural significance given that it was recently taken into public ownership by the residents of New Zealand’s South Island. Though there are plenty of worthwhile coves around striking Australasia, Awaroa is a stand-out for its secluded shallow-water bays and the biodiverse forests that back them.
