Guadalquivir River Cruises

The Guadalquivir, Spain’s only navigable river, cuts a path through enchanting Andalucía and is dotted with hundreds of pretty, rural towns and exquisite Moorish centres. Stretching from the Sierra de Carzola mountains in the east to Spain’s Atlantic Coast, it takes in a diverse sprawl of landscapes and showcases more than a few hidden gems along its route.

The river has been vitally important to Andalucía’s rural communities for millennia, offering both a means to irrigate crops and an easy way to transport goods to the region’s major centres. Among those cities is Seville, the colourful home of the flamenco, and its orange-tree-lined streets promise wish-list moments abound. With its lively tapas bars, exquisite Gothic landmarks and bustling shopping areas, there are plenty of ways to spend a memorable few days meandering around the city.

Further along the Guadalquivir lies Córdoba, once the heart of the Al Andalus caliphate, where you can delve into the rich Islamic history of Moorish Iberia. Featuring more than 300 mosques and citadels, this fascinating city is one of Spain’s most unique centres and promises rewarding exploration at every turn. Of Córdoba’s landmarks, it’s the Mesquita-Cathedral, which is the most impressive, with its exquisite horseshoe arches and sprawl of marble columns. The Alcazar de los Reyes Cristianos is also worth a visit, as is the city’s original Roman Bridge and Medina Azahara.

It’s not just the larger cities that will impress along the Guadalquivir, and there are countless opportunities to embrace the local culture amongst the smaller riverside towns. From authentic bodegas and barrel cellars, famed for their sherry and wine production, to the haciendas that keep Andalucía’s rancher traditions alive, this spectacular region is the ideal choice for a river cruise with a difference.
